Children of a lesser God?

I was trying to explain to my daughter why some of us treasure pre-natal life but believe in capital punishment, and some treasure life after he or she is born, but neatly divide life in the womb from being afterwards.

I gave up.

I guess the simplest thing to say is that I believe all life is sacred -- and I wrote this as a way of honoring the lives of women mostly forgotten by those of us with houses and families and the graces we take for granted.

May they have the peace in death they probably didn't have in life.

Such a wrenching and difficult topic. Perhaps that's why I believe that government needs to stay out of it. Then again, there are certain aspects of the issue where I believe "regulation" (for lack of another term) is necessary. Contradictory, I know.

I also think for some of us, once we've carried life, and know the feel of life from within a week of conception, it changes things. But again, I come back to the extraordinarily personal aspect of the issue, and the sanctity of a woman's body as her own.

No easy answer. But always worth discussing.
